Spanish LDS Music

I’m looking to begin collecting LDS music in other languages besides English. Spanish would be a good one to begin with. I would like to create foreign language channels featuring music similar to what is currently heard on KZION but in other languages. I don’t even know what’s out there as far as foreign language LDS music. I do have two Japanese LDS cd’s and one or two Spanish CD’s. Hardly enough to create a channel but if I can get 30-40 CD’s in a particular language I could than create a channel.

If you can help with any language that would be great. There is a submission link on the KZION website.

I’d certainly like to see some more LDS music in spanish. If the distribution “south of the border” could be figured out, I think there would be good interest in it, considering how many spanish speaking members of the church there are. Still, there could be some good domestic distribution, too, if someone could figure out how to access that market.

I’ve only written one song in Spanish, and while I’ve got some basic tracks recorded, it’s nowhere near ready. And certainly not a whole CD!

I’ve seen a couple of Spanish recordings of some popular LDS artists like Kenneth Cope and JKP, done by other artists…

I have probably the largest collection of Spanish LDS music in Spain. Transferred to MP3 format, it´s not even a whole CD (but more than 600mb). The music quality varies, but I think JKP´s mission to Chile was a godsend for us out here “in the mission field”. I have friends from Chile, and there too, the music has been “smuggled” in Americans, because it´s sure not being sold here.

If you get something going, let me know.

I’ve got around 10 CD’s available from Prime Recordings and I think Sounds of Zion has a few. I also found a dozen or so on Deseret Book Online, although some of those were counted in the Prime and Sounds of Zion.

What I really need is someone who lives down south that can take this project and run with it. Preferably a Spanish artist who has a network of Spanish musicians. Is there such a person?

There were a number of speakers at the FCMA workshop last weekend that talked about international music. Jenny Phillips is one of the bigger proponents of it. She just finished one of her CD’s in spanish. She also says when she tours to other countries she always learns as many of her songs as she can in that native language. She invoked the commandment for all to hear the Gospel in their native tongue as part of her inspiration for that.

This is one area that is about to blow big time. Spanish radio is huge now and is the fastest growing format besides religion in the US right now, so LDS artists need to really start thinking about writing and/or performing music in Spanish.

The Wasatch Front went from zero to three Spanish-language FMs in less than one year. There were two stations that aired General Conference last week, KCFM 96.7 and KSVN 730. ‘Magia 106.1’, an Evanston Wyoming rimshotter, is probably showing us a good variety of contemporary music and KDUT 102.3 and its ‘regional Mexican’ format is the other major form airing now. A third, owned by KSRR, KCFM 96.7 Levan/Provo, airs quite a variety of stuff. Only heard in Utah County.

As far as selling the CDs, there’s a better shot than otherwise, as many stores are very small, on the East Coast these are called ‘bodegas’, other names may be used elsewhere, and many have a few CDs for sale and the stock varies even from day to day. It would not be hard to get Spanish-language LDS music into these stores. But we don’t have to do religious music as it is, and we could create some new stars in the Spanish area just like that if we had them.

As far as what’s out there now, it’s already been mentioned the JKP disc and other things, but I recall Sheree Fitzgerald’s 1985 ‘Sirvenido Con Gozo’, which has been rereleased on CD. You might be able to get that from her website. There also are occasional stray independents. Saw one that was a collection of hymns in Spanish but don’t remember who did that.

Linda Davis (a native of Columbia and LDS Church member) has about 5 CDs out, all in Spanish. I found them at Seagull Book store in Oakland California. Seagull Book website had only her “Divinia Luz” album available.

I would like to get the songs for the primary program 2006 in spanish. Are they available anywhere?

I think the Spanish records out there are not the best quality..either they are Janice Kapp Perry remakes or someone with a terrible voice making a valiant effort…they are old pop lds 80s hits. I too would like to see more of this. I have begun writing some lyrics. I would like to record a CD. Although I lack the musical side (instrumentation) for the CD. I lived in Mexico for 2 years and there is definitely or would be a demand for this type of music. There just isn’t any down there.

I don’t live there anymore, I am in Indonesia, but it is VERY cheap to rent a recording studio here so I would like to make some tracks. I would like to be in on this.

I recall singing learning spanish translations of LDS songs on my mission in Spain. Songs like “Le Oid Venir,” “Muchas Veces Por Las Orillas de Galilea,” etc. I no longer have these lyrics, but am looking to relearn them as I’m living again in a Spanish speaking country. If anyone has the lyrics could you email them to me at richardjpeterson@hotmail.com?

    thanks!

I’m an LDS composer, and the entire content of my album “Whisper the Spirit” (of which “Sirviendo Con Gozo” is translated) is available in Spanish. A new album is in production and will also be available in Spanish.

I am an American, currently living in Chile for the next couple of years (not a mission, my husband is in the Air Force.) My husband loves to sing, and we are starting a search for any sheet music in Spanish that would be appropriate to sing in Sacrament. I would love to have some if anyone knows where I can get it. It would be a tremendous help, and I know that the saints here would love it.

    Thanks!

    To Jennifer,

If you get English music, you can use the Spanish himnos for the translation. Michael Hicks has a beautiful arrangment of “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” in English. I used his music and sang the song in Spanish using the words from the himnos.
