Humor keeps ‘Mexican Mormon’ going.
“It is pretty easy to spot the Mormon gene in Elna Baker. She has a familiar perkiness and breathy, child-like voice and uses two baby bottles and a diaper for props as she struts back and forth under the lights in the tiny comedy club.
“Baker, from a multigenerational Mormon family, was raised in Seattle, Spain and England. She pokes fun at both sides of her family—Dad’s Mexican, Mom’s Anglo. She uses hilarious material culled from a lifetime of dinner table talk, mother’s lectures, a Spanish-speaking grandma and social climbing at the local LDS singles ward.”
Songstress sings for the spirit
“The most unexpected thing about Liriel Domiciano’s voice is not the purity of pitch or lilting quality of the arias and runs. It is her volume. Even with a delicate diaphragm, Liriel reaches fortissimo easily and often. It’s the kind of sound that startles and amazes, and the sound that helped the petite, willowy beauty continue week after week in 2001 on the Raul Gil Amateur Show, the Brazilian version of ‘American Idol.’
“When Liriel was paired with another contestant, tenor Rinaldo Viana, the duo were an overnight success. Their first CD sold more than a million copies in a few weeks, the sixth-best-selling CD in Brazilian history.”

James is #49. The first picture he is running to the outside, the second one he is coming off the field after a touchdown, the third one is James getting a slow start off the line but still managing 4 yards, and the last picture is James getting tackled by Cedar City after a 40 yard run.
Wow, what a game. We showed up about 15 minutes early and saw the starting offense on the field running through some plays. I didn’t see James at first but then saw him standing with the rest of the team. He was not running through the plays with the starting offense. I just couldn’t believe it. I felt so bad for James but we held out hope.
Were his grades not where they should be? We checked them last night on the computer and they looked great. Was he hurt? We just didn’t know. Finally, in the middle of the second quarter James was sent in. We were so nervous. His first carry he ran 10 yards, second carry 11 yards and third carry 35 yards for a touchdown!! Oh my heck, what a great feeling to see my boy after so much struggle to carry the ball in for a touchdown.
James ended up with 124 yards and three touchdowns! We’re on our way to his favorite restaurant, Cafe Rio for a celebration.

My son James plays football for Dixie Jr. High. It’s mid-season and he hasn’t been playing very much. He hasn’t been on the starting team or second team. With 55 players it’s tough to make an impression on the coaches. Today, he starts as running back.![]()
James played football last year in a private league, which was his first experience playing football. All summer long he spent Monday thru Friday down at the high school gym working out, preparing himself for football season. He was so excited to play this year and had high hopes of being a starter. During the first summer conditioning camp he was well ahead of most of the other boys in conditioning because of his preparation.
As practices began he wasn’t being aggressive enough and never took the opportunity to show his coaches what he could do. He also suffered two injuries, missing some vital practices where he should of been learning the plays. The first two games he played a total of 3 minutes. He started to get discouraged.
School started to suffer. He was late for some classes, missed some assignments, bombed some tests and when the third game came along he wasn’t allowed to attend because of his grades. The school’s policy is student first, player second. Which in our eyes is the way it should be. I could see the pain and frustration in James’ countenance. The fourth game James didn’t play at all.
It was time for some intervention. Shelly and I decided we needed to get him in the right place. He was mentally letting everything slip away. We had a long talk and talked about the importance of school, the importance of doing his very best. We don’t expect straight A’s from our kids. We only expect them to do the very best that they can do. We told him that if he gave 100% to his school work and 100% to football that he would feel good about himself and not feel like he failed. I encouraged him to give everything he could during practice. The only place he could prove himself was at the practices since he wasn’t playing in the games. He needed to make his coaches take notice.
We ended with prayer, a big hug and a promise from James that he would do the things we talked about. We went to parent-teacher conferences last week and all of the teachers noticed a big improvement from James in the past two weeks. He has improved all of his grades, he hasn’t been late and his countenance has brightened. This week during practice he made 5 touchdowns and earned a starting position as running back in todays game against Cedar City.
I have never seen a kid so nervous for anything in my life. He expressed his concern for letting the coaches and players down. “What happens if I fumble the ball?” he keeps saying. We reminded him about our talk and that all he can do is his very best. I told him last night he’s going to do great, he’s prepared for this, and everything will be fine. We said a prayer together to help calm his nerves.
Meanwhile my stomach is killing me, I couldn’t sleep last night, and I’m worried sick about him. I need a pep talk!

Watching the P2P war between the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and file sharers is more entertaining than watching any reality show. KAZAA, which supplies the software for file sharers to share their music, movies and other files is now suing the RIAA for using unauthorized versions of their program. Apparently the RIAA has been using a hacked version of KAZAA to catch copyright infringers.
According to BizReport, “Sharman Networks Ltd., the company behind the KAZAA file-sharing software, filed a federal lawsuit Monday accusing the entertainment companies of using unauthorized versions of its software in their efforts to root out users. Entertainment companies have offered bogus versions of copyright works and sent online warning messages to users.”
BizReport also reported that the RIAA dropped one of their lawsuits accusing a 66 year-old woman of “sharing more than 2,000 songs through KAZAA, including rapper Trick Daddy’s ‘I’m a Thug.’ The music companies threatened to hold her liable for up to $150,000 for each song.”

ABCNEWS.com : Court Rules Against Do-Not Call Registry
This is just great. Just when I thought I’d see some reprieve on telemarketing calls at my business and at home, some judge rules that the Federal Trade Commission overstepped its authority in creating a national do-not-call list against telemarketers.
“The telemarketing industry estimates that the do-not-call list could cut its business in half, costing it up to $50 billion in sales each year.”
I receive 5-10 telemarketing calls a day at my business. Don’t I have a right to not be harassed by sales calls all day long?

Shelly and I attended the Kenneth Cope concert in St. George last night. We had such a great time. Kenneth is a master performer and treated the audience to a spiritually uplifting show that bore testimony of Heavenly Father and the Savior. Kenneth performed songs from many of his albums including Greater Than Us All, Women At The Well and my favorite Hear My Praise.
Mindy Gledhill was a guest performer that sang back-up on many of the songs and even sang a few of her own. Apparently Mindy is an up and coming Excel star. I think she will be on their Lumen Records label. Mindy has a very distinctive voice, almost a Norah Jones meets inspirational music. After the concert I talked with many of the people in the audience and everyone was impressed with Mindy and her music.
Kenneth was so comfortable with the audience. He read some inspirational stories between songs and told some personal stories about his younger brother who recently passed away. After the concert I was able to visit with him for a few minutes and even got a picture snapped of the two of us.
I wonder if this LDS family could use another member? If so, I volunteer. Let There Be Light—Please (washingtonpost.com)

The LDS Musician website is featuring four new LDS musicians.
Jennifer Lemmon
Playful poetry sprouts forth from bright synth substrates, yielding the tart and tangy flavor of Jennifer Lemmon’s new EP, “Lemmon Fresh”. More than just an excuse to dance, Lemmon Fresh is an object lesson in how to feel golden in a tarnished world. Sure to be a hit in the clubs, this is the good stuff we’ve all been waiting for. Get outya seat. Step to her beat. You’ll see. “Intelligent stimulation for the body and the mind.”
Hayley Anderson
Hayley Anderson’s voice has been described as angelic and hauntingly beautiful. Her unique sound has quickly caught the attention of the LDS music industry. She has been featured on two LDS albums, Parables and Alleluia II, and has now released her debut album, Fly Again. Fly Again was written and produced by Jenny Phillips, who Hayley has been touring with throughout 2003. Hayley has performed music from Fly Again live on television for Good Things Utah and is scheduled to perform throughout the United States and internationally during 2003 and 2004.
Mary Lyman
Mary captures some of the feelings that she feels about her Savior through the serene simplicity of a solo piano. She hopes that remembering His life will strengthen your own witness of Him and reassure you that He lives! “I really feel honored to write songs on such a sacred topic. It took four years to write and complete this CD, and you can only imagine that the day the CD was finished was one of the happiest days of my life. For any musican, that day always is!”
Lindsay Bennett
A resident of Spartanburg, South Carolina, seventeen year-old Lindsay Bennett has had her share of being in the spotlight. At fifteen, she appeared in two music videos for recording artist, Ricky Moody, and filmed for British rock band J-39. She was also a quarter-finalist contestant on the Ed McMahon show, top 13 on “Showtime at the Apollo” at the Greenville Peace Center, is Miss Teen Spartanburg 2002, currently Spartanburg County’s Junior Miss 2003, and appeared as Liesl von Trapp in the Spartanburg Little Theater’s 2003 production of “The Sound of Music”. Lindsay plans to pursue a career in entertainment and become a professional singer and performer.
The LDS Musicians website reported that they’ve just added another subgroup to their email community dedicated specifically to those performing musicians who are interested in helping to create performance opportunities that are in harmony with the LDS faith.

Internet Week > The Swen Worm > ‘Swen’ Worm Posing As Microsoft E-Mail Spreads Fast > September 19, 2003
I started receiving the Microsoft E-mail Virus last week. “Swen—also called W32/Swen@MM, Gibe, and W32/Gibe-F—masquerades as e-mail from Microsoft, and purports to carry a security update as its file attachment. “
The problem with this virus is that it’s very official looking. The ones I’ve received are from Microsoft Security Services gsvshy_jyreflv@bulletin.ms.com and in the body of the e-mail it says,
“Microsoft Client,
This is the latest version of security update, the “September 2003, Cumulative Patch” update which resolves all known security vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express. Install now to maintain the security of your computer from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an attacker to run code on your system. This update includes the functionality of all previously released patches.”
The virus attachment is named Pack56.exe. The e-mail ends with “Thank you for using Microsoft products.”
“Not only does Swen attempt to steal confidential information from an infected computer—leading in the most dire situation to theft of e-mail and other computer account data—but it also communicates with 230 remote IP addresses, as well as to a remote Web site to track infections.”
So be careful. Common sense should tell you that Microsoft does NOT send out unsolicited updates via e-mail attachments.

I took down the webpage I created as a rebuttal to a very cruel webpage written about the Book of Mormon Movie. But after I saw a second page written by the same author I realized that there was more to this fellow than just being a little upset about a bad movie. I think anyone reading the second page will understand that none of what is written can be taken seriously except by the author.
The whole thing is very strange.

Kenneth Cope—Inspirational LDS Christian Musician
Looks like I’ll be able to attend the Kenneth Cope concert here in St. George on Saturday. I saw Kenneth at the St. George Tabernacle last year but he was performing for a singles event so my wife and I had to sneak in. Jeff Goldman told me that he was bringing his band down with him this time so I’m pretty excited.
Here is his tour schedule. If you are near any of these cities I highly recommend you attend one of his concerts.
Las Vegas, NV —September 19
St. George, UT —September 20
Boise, ID —October 3
Idaho Falls, ID —October 17
Logan, UT —October 18
Sacramento, CA —October 24
Mesa, AZ —November 1
Ogden, UT —November 6
Rexburg, ID —November 14
Salt Lake City, UT —November 15

LDS Official Protests Mesa Temple
This is a really odd article. A guy working in the Mesa Temple has been working to have the Temple added to the National Register of Historic Places. But a church official sent a letter to the State Historic Preservation Office and protested the nomination of the Temple. Sounds like a communication problem.
This article explains the situation a little better.

I was passed along a link to a “Do Not See The Book of Mormon Movie” webpage the other day. The entire page consists of an incoherent slam of The Book of Mormon Movie. It’s not a movie review. I don’t have a problem with someone giving an honest review of a movie and saying it stinks. But the writer actually attacks and attempts to humiliate the cast, director, and everyone associated with the movie.
“Everything about this movie, from top to bottom, is laughable. Writing, directing, acting, sets, costumes, lighting, music (both the composition and the performance), special effect, makeup, wigs, humor – every bit of it is cheap and stupid. Mind numbingly stupid.”
And then he really tells us what he thinks, “The writer/director/producer and all that participated in this film deserve to lose all the money they put into it. They deserve to go bankrupt because of this monstrous display of incompetence and grotesque imbicility. They must not be allowed to continue their shoddy work.”
This crosses the line from expressing frustration at paying to see a bad movie to behaving unchristian like and personally attacking good, honest people who have taken a chance in making a movie about a book that is loved by over 12 million people.
So myself and Jeff Goldman have created a page (removed) exactly like this one with an alternative response to the Book of Mormon Movie. We have responded to each item that’s listed and in the same order. In response to the comment above about the movie being laughable, cheap and stupid we responded with,
“The musical score was fantastic. Bob Bowden, the composer flew to the Czech Republic to record with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. We were so impressed with how the music lifted up many of the scenes to a higher level. Noah Danby who played Nephi did a terrific job. He was believable as Nephi except for a few scenes. But everyone has a preconceived idea of how each of the Book of Mormon characters should be like. The costumes definitely needed improvement and that is an obvious consequence of having a limited budget.”
And in reply to the statement about everyone involved deserve to go bankrupt we reply with,
“We hope that many go to see The Book of Mormon Movie. We hope that the production crew, producers, directors, writers, and everyone involved with the movie are blessed for their time and energy they put into this project. We hope that the film makes money and allows Gary Rogers the resources to film a volume 2 which we’re sure will be better than the first. We hope that people outside Utah, Idaho, and Nevada contact the Book of Mormon Movie folks and let them know that they want The Book of Mormon Movie in their theatre.”
I don’t understand why people feel a need to attack other people for something they believed in and sacrificed for. Just doesn’t seem right to me.
Update: I took down the rebuttal page linked above because after further thought it seemed childish.
KSL News: Idaho Doctor: Parker Probably Needs Chemotherapy
Yeah, no kidding.
(See This Really Chaps My Hide.)
So the Jensen’s take their son to a fourth and final doctor of their choosing and amazingly “Dr. Martin Johnston, a physician at St. Luke’s Hospital, Boise, told the family at a Friday appointment he likely will recommend chemotherapy for the 12-year-old boy, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.”
So guess what the parents response was? Not, “Ok son, it’s time to get this treatment started so you can be healthy again”, or “I guess we were wrong and am sorry for wasting a month and a half of precious time.” Instead, the father said, “They all stick together.” And the boy said, “I don’t really like him…He wants to kill me with poison.”
I know, I know. I’m judging and it’s not my son and I have never been through what the Jensen’s have been through. Certainly the Jensen’s have some logical thought process that justifies their actions. But it still makes me mad.

The Independent: Mobiles ‘make you senile’
I’m in the cell phone business, but I’m still concerned about the long term effects of keeping a cell phone plastered to the side of your head for long extended periods of time.
This article talks about a new study suggesting that “radiation could open the blood-brain barrier, allowing a protein called albumin to pass into the brain…the process is linked to serious brain damage.”
The researchers said “the long-term effects were not proven, and that it was possible the neurons would repair themselves in time. But, neurons that would normally not become “senile” until people reached their 60s may now do so when they were in their 30s.”
Until conclusive evidence is found one way or the other I’m going to keep using my hands-free as much as possible. I’m only in my 40’s and I already have a hard time remembering stuff. For now on when my wife gets upset when I forget to take the trash out to the street on Monday nights, I’m blaming it on my cell phone.
