Baby Update

It’s 2:19 AM MDT and my wife just left for the hospital. My daughter Amy has been there since about 11:00 PM. I’m waiting for the 2-hour warning and then I’ll head over to the hospital. These new babies just have no concept of time.

We’re Gonna Have a Baby

Well…a grandson. My daughter Amy is having contractions 10 minutes apart as I write this. This has been going on for about an hour and a half. Landon would be about four weeks early if he comes tonight or tomorrow but that’s Ok, Amy’s first baby was two weeks early and was still 8 lbs. 9 oz.

I’m too tired for an early morning baby so I suggested she go home and rest.

Here’s Amy being greeted by my newly married daughter Misty as they pulled in from Washington state last week.

Don’t Teach Me That Papa

We stayed in Las Vegas till Monday evening. For lunch on Monday our family and Ty’s family decided to go to the Olive Garden for lunch. On our way we were stopped at a red light. The car next to us was in the left hand turn lane. My grandaughter Aliyia was in our van. The car that was in the left hand turn lane decided to run the red light and shoot off ahead of us into our lane almost causing an accident.

I said, “Oh my gosh…what an idiot!” Well, my grandaughter proceeded to say, “Papa…don’t teach me that.” We laughed all the way to the restaurant. Here is a 3-year old teaching me to be a better example.

Back From The Wedding

This past weekend my second oldest daughter Misty was married to Ty Walker. They make a great couple and Shelly and I are very excited about their life together.

We had quite a scare on Saturday. Misty and Ty were married in Las Vegas and we were all staying at the Sahara. Saturday we were walking to our room and I went ahead to see if I could get checked in early. I was waiting in line when I received a call on my cell phone from my second oldest son Josh. He said that my oldest son Jason had passed out and was not breathing. I ran to where they were, knocking down a few people on my way (Sorry…if you’re reading this :) ) When I arrived there were a couple of paramedics and some hotel security people helping. Jason was awake and appeared to be OK except for the bump on his head from landing on the floor. We’re not sure if he actually ever stopped breathing. The medics thought maybe he had some heat stroke.

We got Jason up to the room and got him into a cool bath and gave him lots of water to drink. He rested a little and was able to attend the wedding. Shelly had been stressing all day trying to get everything perfect. The cakes just right, the reception room decorated perfect and wasn’t enjoying the day and the event. After all this happened with Jason she felt impressed to not worry about all that stuff and just enjoy the rest of the day and the people who had come long distances to be with Misty and Ty. Sometimes we need reminded that people are important and not all the stuff that we get caught up with.

The wedding turned out beautiful and we had a great time.

Sanyo 8100 Camera Phone

I finally got my Sanyo 8100 camera phone today. Pretty cool phone. Has all of the great options you’d come to expect in a cell phone plus the added bonus of a built-in camera. As you can see from the picture of the desk in the KZION studio the pictures are not that great. Especially using indoor light. They’re not bad taken outside or with natural lighting.

The camera only has a resolution of 352×288 pixels but for those spur of the moment pictures it will be great. I can also add 10 second audio clips to the pictures and then e-mail them, upload them or send them to another person who has a compatible phone. The phone has a 65k-color screen with Photo Caller ID and an external caller ID that lets you know who’s calling without opening the phone. Great battery life, small and sleek.

Another important feature is the WAP 2.0 Browser and e-mail.

I think I’ll have some fun with this new toy.

Mercury News | Cell-phone study: More dangerous than driving drunk

Talking on a cell phone behind the wheel is more dangerous than driving drunk, researchers from the University of Utah conclude in a study.”

Oh boy…do you see new driving laws concerning cell phone usage coming to the law books near you?

I don’t like talking on my cell phone when I’m driving except when I’m making the drive to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City. A hands-free headset, a cell phone and a phone book full of numbers and my four hour drive seems like minutes. Of course I don’t remember half the drive there.

KSL News: ‘The Home Teachers’ in Filming

The Home Teachers. Have you seen Singles Ward or The R.M.? John E. Moyer wrote both those screenplays and is now working on The Home Teachers, a comedy about, well, home teaching of course. This latest script is described as “’Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ meets home teaching on the very last day of the month.” Filming starts this month and the movie is scheduled to be released in January 2004.

Fighting Spam

If you’ve been on the Internet for any length of time you probably have received SPAM in your e-mail inbox. Also known as unsolicited e-mail, SPAM has increasingly become abusive and objectionable. In this entry I’m going to show you how I have virtually eliminated having to view SPAM. I’m assuming you receive your e-mail in Outlook, Outlook Express or some other similar e-mail program. This will not work if you use Hotmail, Yahoo, or other similar web-based e-mail systems.

Spammers get their e-mail addreses from many different sources but the major sources are:

Anchorage Daily News | Teaching kids to dream

Teaching kids to dream THURL BAILEY: Ex-pro basketball player shares his lessons

This is a really positive article about Thurl Bailey and his missionary work with the church. It’s difficult these days to find news articles that are positive and accurate about the church.

Thurl is visiting Nome Alaska sharing his positive outlook on life, with the youth.

“I teach them to dream big and look for better things to happen in their lives,” he said. “There’s a lot of youth out there that need to hear that message.”

“I try to teach kids that one wrong decision changes the course of everyone’s life, but one determined right decision also changes that course in the right direction,”

“I’m a member of the Church, so I have a responsibility in my eyes to be a missionary,” Bailey said.

An excellent read!

Better it is to be of an humble spirit…

I had a very simple but powerful spritual experience on Sunday.

A few weeks ago our bishopric was released and a new bishopric was sustained. I was sitting in sacrament meeting yesterday and noticed that our former bishop was helping to pass the sacrament. The spirit bore testimony to me of the truthfulness of the priesthood and the gospel of Jesus Christ and that we are all here on this earth to serve one another and help each other get through this life.

Here’s a man that two weeks prior was the bishop of the ward with tremendous responsibility placed upon him, and this week he is passing the sacrament with the deacons.

“Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.” Proverbs 16:19

“I behold that ye are lowly in heart; and if so, blessed are ye.” Alma 32:8

“And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.” Moroni 7:43

In a world where pride is found in every facet of life and being number 1 is what matters most it’s uplifting to witness the true principles of salvation being practiced.

I Don’t Tawk Like Ahm From Utah

I found a funny article in the Salt Lake Tribune today called Talk of the morning, Never trah to melka wahldboll.

It’s about Utah English and how its roots came from the pioneers.

“All that’s required to hear English the way the pioneers spoke it is to go ‘farth’ to the Mormon ‘wahrd’ and listen to others—perhaps yourself—talk between mouthfuls of ‘carn’ on the cob.”

I grew up in California and have spent time all over the west and I’ve tried really hard to keep from picking up the Utah lingo. But its been difficult.

“’What we have is really a Southern system [of speech] floating in the West,’ Bowie says. ‘If you actually listen to Utah English, you can tell the sound pattern of the words is Southern.’

“Another quirk: Practitioners of Utah English cotton to a form of Southern vowel pronunciation. For example, some Utahns are still prone to ask others, ‘What ‘tahm’ [time] is it?’ and say things like, ‘Ahm [I’m] going to the BYU.” Even so, most utterers of Utah English are neither rubes nor rustics. And Bowie says the dialect should be celebrated, not discouraged.’”

Fer now on ahm gonna fil proud when I tok like a Utahn.

Would You Like To Blog?

Very shortly I will have a multi-user blogging system setup so you can create your own blog. You can create a public blog for everyone to read or you can create a private blog and keep the entries to yourself.

What is a “Blog”?

Blog is what you get when you combine the words “Web” and “Log”. A Blog is a journal, or diary, kept online for other people to look at. The New KZION Blogging system will allow for anyone to keep their own blog, and thus create a community around it.

I know, there are a lot of public blogging systems that are free so why should I provide one? There will be no 3rd party advertising banners and the KZION public blogger will be a community of blogging KZIONites.

Look for it in the next month or so.

KZION’s Move To A New Server Complete

The move seriously took me 16 hours. The actual move only took probably three to four hours but debugging after the move took forever. Or at least it seemed like it took forever. To give you an example of what I was talking about before where program installations never went well on A+. The Jukebox took several hours and I had to pay a professional PHP programmer to help me on the old A+ server. I installed the Jukebox on the new server in 10 minutes with no help needed. If you run into any errors on KZION please be so kind as to let me know so I can get them corrected.

My Big Mouth

I have been using A+ Hosting service since November of 2000. Yesterday I got myself kicked off and had to look for a new provider.

To run a website you must either host it on your own server at home or work, use a free service like Geocities or Freeservers or, rent a remote server. I don’t have adequate bandwidth to run my own server and I don’t want my website visitors to have to endure pop-ups and banner ads that the free servers require. So, I’ve been renting remote servers for the last 7 or 8 years that I’ve been a webmaster.

I’ve been increasingly dissatisfied with A+ because it seems like every time I try to install a new program it takes a day and a half to work out all the errors I get. These are tested programs that should install directly from the box with no errors. Anyway, I wrote to them saying that the time on my server was off by more than a minute. Normally that’s not a big deal but when you are displaying current song information it does make a difference.

TIME.com: Thou Shalt Kill

Ok, this really chaps my hide! This Time Magazine article is titled Thou Shalt Kill. A grim but true tale of Mormons and murder.

It’s a story about a new book recently released called Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. Under the Banner of Heaven is about a man that kills his wife and infant daughter because he said he received revelation from God to kill them. He was a Mormon fundamentalist! Hello Time Magazine…a so called Mormon fundamentalist is NOT a Latter-day Saint or otherwise known as a Mormon. Is “A grim but true tale of Mormons and murder.” really an appropriate title?

Because a few mislead people decide to leave the church, practice polygamy, and call themselves Mormon fundamentalists doesn’t mean they have anything to do with the Mormon church. Ok, I need to calm down. I don’t know why I get so fired up about these things. The LDS church has been misrepresented since it began and that misrepresentation continues today and will continue.

The Salt Lake Tribune — ‘Brigham Young’s’ Arduous Trek to DVD

‘Brigham Young’s’ Arduous Trek to DVD

I have never heard of this movie but it was released in 1940 and stars John Carradine, Porter Rockwell, Tyrone Power and Vincent Price as Joseph Smith. According to the article it is “the first big budget Hollywood movie to positively portray Latter-day Saints”. The movie cost $1.4 million which today would of cost $150 million.

“Brigham Young” is about the trek west from Nauvoo, Il to Salt Lake City.

I didn’t see anywhere in the article about where the DVD will be available but I would assume almost anywhere that has a good collection of DVD’s.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl

Shelly and I went to see the Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl last night. I really enjoy action movies. Shelly really enjoys “chick flicks”. But she has been really good and has come with me to see The Incredible Hulk and Pirates without a single chick flick in-between.

Pirates is about a blacksmith and a pirate who take off to save the governor’s daughter and get back the pirates ship. Johnny Depp plays the pirate and does an excellent job. I’m not big into knowing who is who. I don’t keep up with actors and actresses lives and actually Shelly had to tell me which character was Johnny Depp. The movie has some great special effects and if you like your action movies sprinkled with humour throughout then you’ll like Pirates. I really liked that there were very few swear words, no sexual scenes, and no taking of the Lord’s name in vain.

Have you ever used Screen-It to check out movies before you go see them? I have been using Screen-It since my kids were teenagers. When a kid would come and ask if they could see a particular movie, the first thing we would ask is if they printed out the Screen-It review of the movie. Undoubtedly that would get an “Oh dad, come on” response. The reason is that Screen-It lists everything, and I do mean everything that is objectionable in a movie. It’s run by a husband and wife team and they give a heavily detailed and complete look at popular entertainment. Sometimes it can be quite depressing because I’ll get all psyched up to go see a really cool looking movie and find out through Screen-It that it’s filled with stuff I would never intentionally go see.

So if you’re the type of person that would rather ask forgiveness than permission, don’t use Screen-It to look up your movies before you go see them.

Update on The Apia Samoa Temple

The Angel Moroni survived the Apia Samoa Temple fire. “When firefighters riding three fire trucks and more than 100 volunteers finally extinguished flames engulfing the Apia Samoa temple Wednesday night, the only remnants were the exterior walls, the steel girders of the steeple — and the angel Moroni on top.” Deseret News
